Woodpecker Holes

Woodpecker Holes
Dendrocopos major

You can see the holes in the ash tree probably made by the great-spotted woodpecker. As well as making holes for nesting, the woodpeckers make holes in dead trees to get at beetle larvae living in the wood, and they drum to signal to other woodpeckers.
If you are lucky you may see the great-spotted or the larger green woodpecker around the park. Green woodpeckers are often seen on the ground, feeding on ants.
