The white-barked Himalayan birch is growing here near the more usual silver birch. In the scientific name Betula utilis (var jacquemontii), the word ‘utilis’ refers to the many uses made of this tree, including using the paper-thin bark for writing on. The word ‘pendula’ means hanging down. Notice the difference in the way the branches and twigs hang or are upright and the size of the leaves in the two trees. Silver birch is a pioneer species that colonises neglected brown-field sites (old building land), railway sidings etc.
