Natural range: China. Introduced to Brtain in 1947.

Frequently planted in the London suburbs. Less common north of Midlands, Wales and Ireland, rare in Scotland. Hardy but needs warm summers for proper growth. One of only a few deciduous conifers in the world. When planted near water develops aerial roots (pneumatophores) that look like knee structures above water level to absorb oxygen.
