Common Ash

Common Ash
Fraxinus excelsior
Height up to 40 m
Natural range: Mainland Europe and Britain.

This is a magnificent tall tree. Ash has distinctive black buds and grey bark. The seeds, known as ash keys, hang abundantly in bunches, and the tree has very distinctive male flowers of a varying red hue that appear before the leaves. Ash timber is light coloured, very strong and useful for furniture and home interiors.

The area where these trees are planted is a remnant of ridge and furrow farming.
